How Textbook Buyback Works - and What It Means to Faculty

Our bookstore buys used textbooks from students throughout the semester. However, the biggest time for "buyback" is during exam week at the end of each term. Here's an overview of how the
buyback process works, as well as some information about pricing.

Who decides which books we buy back? Faculty provide their orders for the books they'll use each term. We compile a list of all the titles that will be used again - or re-adopted - for the upcoming term. These books have the most value for us because we can sell them next semester. They have value to students because they can get more money for books that will be used again on their campus. Books that won't be used again, or that are being replaced by new editions, are sold to used wholesalers.

How much do we pay? The bookstore will generally pay up to 50% of the price of the new textbook for books in good condition that have been re-adopted before buyback for the next semester. We can pay this amount for the quantity that can be resold. After we reach our quantity, we pay the wholesale price for the book. The wholesale price depends on national demand for the book. When wholesalers receive more copies of a book than they can resell, or the book is an old edition, the value of the book is zero - and that's one more reason to consider re-adopting your books for the next term.

How does early adoption help students at buyback? Your timely re-adoption allows the student to sell back their book for a greater percentage and also helps contribute to the inventory the bookstore will need for the next term. Here's an example:

With on-time adoption:

Purchase Price Buyback Amount
Textbook - New $100 $50

Textbook - Used $75 $50

With late adoption:

Purchase Price Buyback Amount
Textbook - New $100 Wholesale Pricing 10-30% of Purchasing Price

Textbook - Used $75 Wholesale Pricing 10-30% of Purchasing Price

Three reasons to re-adopt early:

  1. You'll help students get more cash for their books.

  2. You'll keep quality educational materials available for students in your class next semester.

  3. You'll save on paper, printing, and distribution costs.
